Good News from Capital Square

23 Jan

According to recent posts from the Virginia Bicycling Federation, things are going fairly well so far for legislation focused on pedestrian and cyclist safety.  It’s by no means too late to write to your representatives in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates to urge them to support these measures.

Here’s a quick rundown (more details on the VBF site):

• The Senate “dooring” bill was on the docket in the Senate Transportation Committee today.  No word yet about whether it made it through.

• The three-foot passing bill was passed by the full Senate today and will be considered by the House a bit later.  Yay!

• A bill on cell phone use by provisional drivers barely made it through the Senate.  Hard to imagine why enforcing a stiff penalty for an inexperienced driver talking on the phone while driving should meet such resistance, but there you go.

Check out the VBF site for updates (you can also sign up for an email) and more details.  The site includes this overview of relevant legislation in this session.

Yay we get three feet, a little elbow room; thanks Senate! While you’re at it, throw in some bike/pedestrian bridges, a couple bike lanes, and some damn common courtesy or recognition from the VA driver. Send McAuliffe the bill. That’s all for now.
