The Bikeable Richmond blog is intended a small contribution to the ongoing work of making the city more bike friendly and encouraging Richmonders to consider bicycling as a healthy and practical mode of transportation.  I hope to provide a forum for sharing information and exchanging views relevant to Richmond’s development of an infrastructure and culture that will allow everyone to bike safely in the city.

My name is Jason James.  I am a professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg.  I’ve lived in Richmond since 2006, for most of that time in Bellevue, with my wife and (more recently) three year-old son.  We have one car and three bikes.  My wife rides to work downtown year-round except when there’s ice or snow on the streets; I ride to the Fan to join my carpool.  We also ride around the neighborhood and sometimes farther afield with our son.  My dream is that we will someday be able to ride safely with a child anywhere we want to go in Richmond.

Disclaimer: I am a member of the Mayor’s Pedestrian, Bicycle, and Trails Commission, but this blog is not associated with that body or the city of Richmond.  It reflects my own views on bikability issues.

It’s great to see so much energy around making Richmond bike-friendly. I look forward to reading your blog, Jason. I recently wrote a piece about bicycling in Richmond, and it’s on the Virginia Bicycling Federation website:

Great blog Jason! Thanks to the efforts of folks like you things are getting better for us here in Richmond. I think the message is getting through that bicycles are something we can all use to improve our lives.

kudos! I am a strong believer in making Richmond better for cycling. I went to the Netherlands last year on a personal bike journey and posted some great pics on my blog at http://www.adamjhaller.com. Perhaps one day, we’ll see some of the same here.

Thanks, Adam. Wonderful images from the Netherlands. Those are the kinds of paths etc. that get can get everyone out on bikes. I too fantasize about having even half of the bike facilities in Richmond that you find in the Netherlands and Denmark. If the mayor is serious in what he says about making Richmond bike friendly, we will hopefully be making some significant steps in that direction soon.
